The Holly Bears A Berry

from 12 Songs of Christmas by Simon Robinson

/

about

On the 11th day of Christmas, I give to you 'The Holly Bears a Berry' (Roud 451). This is an example of a folk song that made into the popular carol tradition here in the UK. It was first transcribed and published by Cecil Sharp in 1913 from the singing of Thomas Beard, a villager in St Day in the parish of Gwennap, Cornwall. Also known as 'The Sans Day Carol', is a variation on the popular carol 'The Holly and the Ivy' and has been recorded by singers on both sides of the Atlantic, notably The Waterson's from the UK and Jean Ritchie from the USA.
