Bitter Withy

from 12 Songs of Christmas by Simon Robinson

about

On the 6th Day of Christmas, I give to you The Bitter Withy (Roud 452)...

This song's roots date back to the 15th Century and reflects upon an unusual and apocryphal vernacular idea of Jesus Christ as an infant. The withy of the title is the Willow and is likewise peopled with figures out of the rural landscape of medieval England — the child playing ball in the street, the snobbish young rich boys who scorn him, the rich young mothers who run with their tale of disaster, and the angry mother who chastises her child by laying him across her knee and thrashing him.

The song was recorded amongst others by Mike Waterson on The Waterson's LP 'Sound, Sound Your Instruments of Joy' and the Kingston Trio on their album 'The Last Month of the Year'.
