about

There are two main versions of this well known song, either the Johnson
boys were Civil War heroes (Flatt and Scruggs, New Lost City Ramblers)
or complete idiots (Frank Proffitt, Lily Mae Ledford). This version borrows
from the latter version, with the Proffit version found in the Anne and
Frank Warner Collection, and the Ledford version in Alan Lomax 'The
Folk Songs of North America'. Banjo tuned bEBEC#, or Double C capod
up to fret 4.

lyrics

Johnson boys went a-courtin'
Coon creek girl so pretty and sweet
They couldn't make no comversation
They didn't know where to put their feet
They didn't know where to put their feet
They didn't know where to put their feet

Johnson boys raised in the ashes
Didn’t know how to court a maid
Turn their backs and hide their faces
Sight of a pretty girl makes ’em afraid
Sight of a pretty girl makes ’em afraid
Sight of a pretty girl makes ’em afraid

Johnson boys went to the mountains
Johnson boys didn't mean to stay
They came back broke and hungry
Had no money for to pay their way
Had no money for to pay their way
Had no money for to pay their way

Johnson boys went a-huntin’
Took two dogs and went astray
Tore their clothes and scratched their faces
Didn’t come home ’til the break of day
Didn’t come home ’til the break of day
Didn’t come home ’til the break of day
