about

When John G. McCurry published this song in his 1855 'Social Harp', he
added a note that he had "learned the air" when he was eight years old.
Like other song compilers of his era, McCurry brought into his collection
folk melodies that had been gracefully sculpted by time. 'Parting Friends'
is one of several variants of the old Irish melody 'Wayfaring Stranger',
found in the shape-note tune books. The 'Sacred Harp', which had
included one variant in its 1844 edition, added two others in later
revisions.

lyrics

Farewell, my friends, I'm bound for Canaan
I'm trav'ling through the wilderness
Your company has been delightful
You, who doth leave my mind distressed

I go away, behind to leave you
Perhaps never to meet again;
But if we ever have this pleasure
I hope we'll meet on Canaan's land
