about
Train on the Island is an old-time/bluegrass banjo and fiddle tune
originally found in North Carolina, Virginia and Tenessee. The first
recording was a field recording made in a make-shift studio in Bristol,
Tenessee for Victor records in 1927 by J.P. Nestor (J. Preston Nestor,
banjo) and Norman Edmonds, fiddle. There have been many great
recordings since, and this slower version gives a nod to Bruce Molsky's
1997 recording with Big Hoedown. Banjo tuned to Open G (gDGBD).
lyrics
Train on the island, hear the whistle blow
Go and tell my true love, I'm sick and I can't go (x2)
Train on the island, hear that whistle squeal
Go and tell my true love how lonely I do feel (x2)
Gonna build me a banjo, string it up with twine
The only tune that it would play, I wish that girl was mine (x2)
Train on the island, thought I heard it squeal,
Go and tell my true love I can't hold the wheel (x2)

I have listened to bluegrass and old-timey style banjo music for many years. Nora Brown has the most poetic interpretation of these styles that I have heard so far. She is the John Fahey of banjo (but also with striking vocals). brit_b
